Elevate your Afternoon Tea with a theme

There’s something magical about an afternoon tea—whether it’s a sophisticated gathering, a cozy get-together with friends, or a special celebration. The delicate finger sandwiches, freshly baked scones, and beautifully arranged sweet treats make it an experience to savour. Adding a theme—whether inspired by the season, a colour palette, or a favourite destination like London or Paris—can bring an extra layer of fun and cohesion to your table, making the occasion even more memorable for your guests.

To get you started I’ve featured four of the most popular themes (below) with some ideas that you might like to include, as well as 20 other themes worth exploring.

Top 3 Essential Elements for hosting an Afternoon Tea at Home

Theme or no theme, your Afternoon Tea will be an amazing success if you focus on these three essential elements:

The table
Location: Natural light, pleasant surroundings, and comfort set the mood. A garden, dining room, or cozy corner makes a big difference. A linen, floral or lace tablecloth, tiered stands, teacups, plates, cutlery, and napkins. It should look pretty but also be practical to use.

Thoughtful Menu with Good Timing
Quality tea, well-made scones, fresh sandwiches, and bite-sized sweets. Serve on a tiered stand – savoury (sandwiches) first, then scones, then sweet treats to finish. Don’t forget the cream! Work your way from bottom to top.

Atmosphere (Flowers, Music, and Ambience)
Flowers, soft music, and a welcming atmosphere make guests feel relaxed and special.

Essential for a visual and fragrant boost, flowers bring elegance, colour, and a sense of occasion and I think they create the strongest link to Afternoon Tea. Remember to keep the arrangements low.

My favourites include:

  • Roses
  • Peonies
  • Sweet Peas
  • Lavender
  • Hydrangeas
  • Dahlias
  • Cornflowers
  • Freesias & Ranunculus
  • Foliage – magnolia leaves, olive leaves, or fresh herbs (rosemary, mint or sage).

Bridgerton Afternoon Tea Party

This is such a wonderful and popular theme that I’ve done a whole post on it! Click here to view – it will give you everything you need to create a wonderul Regency-inspired afternoon tea.

Parisian Chic Tea

  • Decor: Linens with French accents (a little Eiffel tower perhaps?) or maybe a Versailles inspired Afternoon Tea for a touch of decadence? Gold gilt candlesticks, big overblown roses, crystal glassware, fine china, mirror centrepieces. Or maybe the pastel beauty of Laduree is more your thing?
  • Menu: Visit your favourite patisserie for croissants, éclairs, profiteroles, tartlets, madeleines, mini quiche, or macarons. Why not make my Daisy Choux Puffs or Lemon Tartlets with Pistachio Meringues too?
  • Extras: Serve Champagne for a touch of luxury, play songs by Edith Piaf
  • Dress: Ask guests to dress in their version of Parisian chic or perhaps full Marie-Antoinette (she liked cake…lol)

Gather your friends and family for a pre-Christmas Afternoon Tea! It’s the perfect way to catch up before the big day when time and personal commitments can make it difficult to fit everyone in.

I’ve put together a whole Christmas Afternoon Tea at Home post on this one complete with a do-ahead timeline to minimise stress (no one needs that – especially at Christmas).

More Themed Afternoon Tea Ideas worth exploring

Downton Abbey Afternoon Tea

Step into British elegance with a formal, upstairs-downstairs feel. Use vintage china, soft classical music, a silver tea service or porcelain tea pot, and a refined menu reminiscent of Lady Grantham’s tea table and Mrs Patmore’s kitchen.

Try my Afternoon Tea Scones, finger sandwiches: cucumber, curried egg or chicken. Salmon pikelets, sweet treats like vanilla cupcakes with edbile flowers or even raspberry jelly cakes. Or go all out with my Lemon & Blackberry Sandwich Cake.

Roses and Rosé

A romantic, floral affair featuring rose-themed decor and rosé wine or rosé-infused teas. Perfect for spring and summer—pair with pink iced pastries and petal-topped cakes.

Mother’s Day or Father’s Day

Celebrate with a heartfelt, personalised afternoon tea. Serve their favourite foods (yes, that may mean party pies with sauce for Dad or my Tiny sausage rolls), set the table with flowers or incorporate colours such as Dad’s footy team colours!

Special Birthday (or Any Birthday!)

Make someone feel special with a tea party tailored to their favourite colours, sweet or savoury treats, or even hobbies. Add a cake and candles to incorporate the birthday theme. I’d like a smoked salmon and cheese party if anyone I love is reading this!

Easter

A cheerful tea with pastels, daffodils, and treats like hot cross buns, lemon drizzle cake, and bunny-shaped cookies. Ideal for kids and adults alike. Why not host an Easter Egg Hunt too?

Afternoon Tea Picnic

Pack some food and blankets for an outdoor tea party in the park or garden. Use eco-friendly disposables, fresh fruit, and iced tea for a relaxed vibe. My finger sandwiches would work well as well as little cupcakes – use sealable containers so they don’t get squashed. Wrap scones in foil straight from the oven so they stay warm. A thermos of tea or coffee and a bottle of something with bubbles is a perfect addition.

Seasonal (e.g., Autumn / Fall, or Summer Strawberries – a Japanese favourite)

Celebrate the time of year with seasonal produce or decor: pumpkin scones in autumn, strawberries and cream in summer, or daffodils and freesias in spring. Try my Raspberry White Chocolate Cheesecake Slice

Pre-Wedding / Hen’s or Shower Tea

A classy alternative to a wild night out—think floral crowns, prosecco, and bridal games with a touch of elegance. Serve tea blends, my Afternoon Tea Mimosa or champagne cocktails.

Baby Shower

Soft colours, tiny treats, and thoughtful decorations for the parent-to-be. Gender-neutral or themed with storybook elements. Adapt the icing colours on my Mini Flower Cupcakes to pastels instead.

Melbourne Cup / Ascot / Kentucky Derby

Celebrate racing fashion and flair with fascinators, champagne, and flower arrangements. Add a sweep or a “best hat” competition.

Children’s Tea Party

Let younger guests help plan and prepare. Use fun themes like teddy bear tea, princess party, or pastel picnic. Keep it playful with mini sandwiches and cupcakes. Don’t forget the Tiny Sausage Rolls!

Royal Garden Party

Inspired by Buckingham Palace events—elegant table settings, garden roses, and classic English fare. Encourage guests to dress up in gowns, tiaras and jewels. Make my Lemon Tartlets with Pistachio Meringues for a touch of glamour.

Alice in Wonderland

A whimsical, Mad Hatter-inspired setting with mismatched china, quirky signs (“Eat Me”), and playful treats. Ideal for birthdays or themed bridal showers. My Pistachio Brownies with Pistachio Buttecream would fit right in!

Vintage 1940s or 1950s Tea

A nostalgic throwback with bunting, floral prints, and old-school recipes like sponge cake and treacle tarts. Use retro china and some vintage finds for an authentic touch. My Little Rasperry Jelly Cakes are a perfect fit!

Literary Afternoon Tea

Celebrate favourite British authors with a bookish twist—Jane Austen, Agatha Christie, or J.K. Rowling. Guests can bring or exchange books while enjoying themed treats and readings. Ideas include Pride & Prejudice (get some great decor ideas by watching the BBC series with Colin Firth as Mr Darcy), Miss Marple, or Harry Potter.

Wimbledon Afternoon Tea

Serve strawberries and cream, Pimm’s, scones, and cucumber finger sandwiches while watching tennis. Add white linens, tennis-themed decor like napkins and placemats. Roses are the traditional flowers and make a beautiful centrepiece and add a pop of colour against the white cloth too.

Tea & Tarot / Tea Leaf Reading

Add a mystical edge to your afternoon. Offer herbal blends like mint or chamomile and invite a reader or learn to interpret tea leaves together. My post on how to make tea will be helpful – just don’t strain the tea.

Garden to Table

Use seasonal, homegrown, or local ingredients to celebrate freshness and sustainability like chocolate and beetroot cake or carrot cupcakes, pumpkin scones and zucchini slice. Add fresh herbs to bouquets and serve herbal teas like lemon verbena or mint.

Savour the moment

A themed afternoon tea is a beautiful way to elevate a classic tradition and turn a simple gathering into something truly memorable. Whether you go all out with coordinated décor and a signature menu, or keep things subtle with a thoughtful colour scheme and fresh flowers, the most important ingredient is you. With a little planning, even the smallest details can leave a lasting impression. So choose a theme that excites you, enjoy the process of bringing it to life, and don’t forget to savour the moment—preferably with a scone in hand.
